Irene Cokeley of Montesano, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025, at the
age of 69, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.
Irene was born in Maryville, Missouri, and over the course of her life she held many roles – bartender, rural mail carrier, bookkeeper and secretary, and, most notably – a wife, a mother, and a grandmother. Her work ethic was matched only by her devotion to her family and the many passions that brought her joy. She loved knitting, reading, watching sci-fi and scary movies, and playing computer games.
Above all, Irene had a love for cats, rescuing and caring for countless kitties who were lucky enough to find their way into her heart and home.
Irene is survived by her husband of 39 years, Jon Cokeley; her three children, Tom Oien, Jr., Audra Oien, and Amber Hardtke; her two step children, Brauk Cokeley and Kelly Monroe; her ten grandchildren, Shayla Oien, Bradley Oien, Nysa Oien, Tommy Oien III, Camryn York, Adam York, Jr., Chad Cokeley, Shelby Cokeley, Abbi Vance, and Jessica Vance; and her nephews, Caleb and Curtis Laughlin, whom she raised and cherished as her own sons. She is also survived by her four sisters, Darla Ludwig, Gail Cunningham, Stephanie Smith, and Karlene Laughlin. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Leroy Laughlin and James Porter.
Those who knew Irene will remember her as incredibly strong, fiercely loving, and endlessly selfless, with a wicked sense of humor. Her children, grandchildren, and the many others she welcomed into her life all knew the warmth of her motherly care. If you entered her home, you became one of “her kids,” and she would talk with you, listen, advise, and make sure you felt loved. She always put the needs of others before her own, a testament to the depth of her giving heart.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date to honor her memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to a local animal rescue in Irene’s
honor.
